4 Tips for Creating Excel Files

These days, Microsoft Excel may be the most important program in the world. It’s big, powerful, and does everything you want from a spreadsheet. In fact, Excel contains so many options to slice and dice data that it’s all but impossible to recount them all. What you can do, though, is master some intricate tips that will make using Excel that much easier. Not sure where to start? Here are our five best tips for creating Excel files!

1. AutoFill Your Cells

Are you about to type a series of repetitive things like dates? If so, you can use the AutoFill command to do this for you automatically.

Start by filling up the first few cells, then move your cursor to the lower-right part of the last cell. When it turns into a plus sign, drag it down to select all the cells to fill. They’ll fill by themselves using the pattern you started.

You can even AutoFill without a pattern! Again, pick a cell, select the fill handle, then drag it down. You’ll get a menu of AutoFill options depending on the data you entered first.

2. Wrap the Text

Typing in an Excel file can be frustrating. By default, the text you type in the cells will continue forever, which looks unwieldy.

The solution: use the Wrap Text option under the Home tab. That will make all text wrap at the edge of the cell you’re currently working on. So even if you resize your rows or columns, the text will re-wrap to fit them.

If you have multiple cells with text overrun, select them all before clicking Wrap Text. You can also select all the cells you want to type in and click Wrap Text to have everything you type wrap in the future.

3. Add Graphics to Charts

Little known fact: you can put a graphic in any element of an Excel file. Every bar, cell, or part of a pie chart can support its own image.

For example, let’s say you want to put an image on a particular slice of the pie chart. First, select the slice, then click on the Series Options fly-out menu. From there, select Picture or Texture Fill.

4. Put Excel Data Into Word

A while ago, the idea of pasting data from Excel into Word was mind-blowing. Now, all you need to do is copy and paste data into the other program.

The thing to keep in mind here is that this is a link-and-embed process. So if you change the data in Excel, it will change in the Word document as well. That’s true even if you C# create Excel file.
