Is your garage door more than 25 years old now? If so, this is usually a clear-cut sign that it probably needs to be replaced.
Garage Door Replacement
Some people will try and push their garage doors further than that to avoid the costs that come along with putting a new one into place. But you could put your home at risk and hurt its curb appeal in a big way by keeping a garage door beyond its expiration date.
Some other signs will let you know that it’s officially time for your garage door to go. You should keep your eyes peeled for these signs and spring into action at the first sign of trouble.
Here are seven signs you need to consider strongly considering a new garage door installation.
1. Your Garage Door Looks Awful
Your garage door might work just fine right now. But if you’re embarrassed by how it looks, that shouldn’t even matter. You should still think about replacing it.
You can take all the steps you want to try and improve your home’s curb appeal. But if you hate how your garage door looks, it won’t make any difference. Your curb appeal will still be lacking as long as your garage door is in place.
2. It Doesn’t Go Up and Down As It Should
When you push the button on your garage door opener, your garage door should go up and down without a problem. If it doesn’t, this will be a big issue for you.
It might only be a matter of time before your garage door either goes up or down and stays there. To avoid finding yourself in this scenario, you should have it replaced sooner rather than later.
3. It Needs to Be Repaired Almost All the Time
If you keep a garage door around for a long enough time, it will eventually need to be repaired. Different parts will fail and need to be replaced to get your garage door running like normal again.
But if you’re repairing your garage door every other week, that’s not going to be a good sign. You’ll be better off replacing it than continuing to pay to have it fixed all the time.
There is nothing wrong with repairing the occasional part on your garage door. But when it becomes habitual, it’s not going to make much sense to keep trying to fix it.
4. It Makes a Lot of Noise When You Open and Close It
When a garage door is installed, it’ll usually go up and down without making almost any noise. You’ll be surprised by how little noise it makes despite all the moving around.
But over time, garage doors can begin to become noisier and noisier. Before long, you’ll wake the whole house up every time you open or close your garage door.
You may be able to quiet your garage door by picking up new parts. But you might also have to think about throwing in the towel and getting a new garage door to make it quiet again.
5. It Hurts Your Home’s Energy Efficiency
Have you noticed that your home’s energy bills have increased quite a bit in recent months? Your home’s windows and doors could be to blame for this. That’s a good start when trying to explain your home’s sudden lack of energy efficiency.
But your skyrocketing bills might also be caused by a lack of garage door insulation. You’ll have to change that to bring your bills back down.
You might have some luck adding new insulation to your old garage door. But if it seems like it might be a lost cause, your best bet could be to get a new garage door altogether.
6. It Struggles to Keep Your Home Secure
Not everyone realizes this, but your garage door is arguably the most important door in your house in terms of home security. If you don’t close and lock it up tight, it could make your home susceptible to burglars.
Fortunately, you should be able to avoid having this happen by always closing your garage door and keeping it locked. But if you have an older door in your garage, it might stop providing the security you need. You’ll need to buy a new one to beef up your home security backup.
7. It No Longer Matches the Style of Your Home
If you’ve made it a point to change almost every other aspect of the front of your home, your old garage door might simply not match the style of your house anymore. That will give you every reason to replace it.
You might even want to do away with your garage door and seal up your garage to make it a part of your home to switch up its style. You can get a metal garage built on another part of your property to replace it. It’ll revamp the look of your home without forcing you to give up your garage completely.
If You Spot Any of These Signs, Schedule Garage Door Replacement Right Away
You shouldn’t let an old garage door linger for any longer than it has to. It could affect everything from the appearance of your home to its security of it.
Look out for the signs mentioned here and do something about your old garage door if you spot them. Installing a new garage door can prevent problems from occurring inside and outside your house.
