Tricks to Write and Compose a Song in 5 Simple Steps

Are you looking to write and compose a song but aren’t sure where to get started?

Writing a great song is actually an incredibly difficult task. In addition to memorable lyrics, you also need a melody that is catchy yet unique.

If you have no idea where to begin, you’ve come to the right place.

Read on to learn how to structure a song.

Start With the Title

Starting with a song title may seem strange, but this will help you stay focused on a single idea in your song.

You want to choose a phrase that’s one to six words long and that suggests some situation or emotion. Once you have your title, create a list of questions regarding what your listeners may want to know about the title.

For example, “How do you feel about the title” or “What does the title mean?”

Choose the Song Structure

After you have a general idea about what the song is about, it’s time to put together the song structure.

Most of today’s biggest hits rely on a song structure that is set up as: Verse / Chorus / Verse / Chorus / Bridge / Chorus. Some songs also add a short section that’s known as a “lift” or “pre-chorus” to build anticipation.

The pre-chorus, chorus, and verse each have an identifiable melody that the listener can instantly recognize.

Choose a Question to Answer in the Chorus and Verses

Since the chorus is the most essential part of the song, we suggest starting there.

Select a question that you want to answer in the chorus, and then write down a short phrase that expresses your response. Look for action words and images that you can bring to life. What is the singer thinking, feeling, or saying?

Then, do the same for the verses.

Find the Melody in the Lyrics

After you’ve written your lyrics, it’s time to find the melody in them.

To do this, read your lyrics aloud and say them with a lot of emotion. Then, say them again, this time with even more feeling. Take note of the natural melody and rhythm of your speech as you display the lines aloud.

Keep going over it until it turns into something distinguishable.

Add Chords

Once you’ve got a general melody going, it’s time to add chords.

Start with a simple, repeated chord pattern and play with the chords and melody until you find something that sticks. Then, record yourself playing and singing (even if it’s just on your smartphone), so you can get your ideas down before forgetting them.
