Elder Scrolls Online Vs. World of Warcraft: which is the best MMORPG?

Elder Scrolls Online

Nowadays, we can find a lot of similar games. Most titles tend to have features similar to others, which has undoubtedly remained a tradition, but there comes a point when it is time to decide which is the best among them.

Regarding MMORPG, WOW and ESO are the most famous ones; while WOW has been there since the late 2000s and follows the history of a 30-year-old franchise, the ESO structure has made players migrate, even from online games like Habbo.

So, let’s break this through:

Introduction to Elder Scrolls

Elder Scrolls is a series of video games developed to offer players many unique experiences within what is known as role-playing games.

This game is presented as an MMORPG where the freedom of approach and large territorial extension are the strongest points and what most attracts players to it.

Each of the episodes that have been released in the game refers to a new chapter of the story. That is to say, each expansion of the game means that it is an extension where the player can leave a mark.

Introduction to World of Warcraft

Warcraft is part of several video games created to create a whole universe that has made this game one of the greatest role-playing games in history.

You can control an avatar within the game, as is customary in games of this style. Everything is handled in the third person, and people can explore a fairly large world while fighting with other characters and monsters.

On top of that, as each expansion sees the light of day, new storylines that players can follow emerge. Currently, Warcraft is considered a dinosaur of MMORPGs. Nevertheless, you may be surprised that WOW is still filled with active players and has a brutal esports scene.

This way, the game is still alive enough to sell merchandise on sites like DHgate.

But which one is better?

For sanity, we will talk about Exploration, Story, and features. This matters for MMORPG players because the discussion would end automatically if we only look at the competitive side.

Freedom of exploration: ESO Vs. WOW

This is something that many people tend to analyze when they enter a game. Hours of fun translate into all the content they can consume, so they expect a game to have a fairly large map so they can visit hundreds of locations.

In this aspect, we have a winner: Elder Scrolls Online is a game with a much wider map and, in turn, more freedom for the player to explore.

On the other hand, ESO allows you to completely ignore the main missions until a certain point, while you will have difficulty growing in WOW if you don’t follow the line.

Background stories

Theoretically, this is evenly matched between the two games, even though Warcraft is a bit older than Elder Scrolls.

However, over the years, we have seen how Warcraft has released new and exciting expansions that keep everyone entertained within the game. In addition, it is important to mention that with these expansions have come many stories that make the game more engaging.

Regarding the quality of the stories, they are both on the same level, yet WOW has managed to offer a rich lore that has kept attracting fans over the years.

Special features

In theory, both games are very much on par, although we must say that, undoubtedly, Elder Scrolls Online has managed to surpass the Warcraft system currently presented by far.

The bad thing about this is that in Elder Scrolls Online, the system is somewhat limiting, which is not so much the case in Warcraft. However, everything is mainly centered on each person’s taste, so in theory, from a neutral point of view, this could be considered as a tie between both games.

At the end

For those people who like more of a classic MMORPG in every sense of the word, World of Warcraft is undoubtedly the best option. On the other hand, for sandbox and freedom lovers, Elder Scrolls Online is the game of choice. So, while both games are awesome, WOW wins the MMORPG badge.
