Going to Prison: This Is What It’s Like

Going to Prison

The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate on the entire planet at the moment. There are almost 2 million people sitting in American jails and prisons scattered throughout the country. If you were just accused of breaking the law, you might be looking at doing some jail time in the near future. You should start learning about what you can expect after going to prison so that you’re mentally prepared for it.

It would be impossible for us to sit here and tell you the exact answer to the question, “What is prison like?” since there are so many types of prisons, and each one is different. But we can give you a general idea of what you can look forward to.

Here is what prison will be like for many people.

It’s Going to Be Uncomfortable

From the second you set foot inside a prison, you’ll always be uncomfortable to some degree.

For starters, you’re never going to feel 100% safe in there. You’ll be looking over your shoulder as soon as you enter prison, and that feeling might never leave you, even when you finally get out.

You’ll also be physically uncomfortable when you lie on your bed, sit down in your chair, and go about your business throughout each day. Going to prison is just not going to be a comfortable experience at all.

It’s Going to Be Lonely

After going to prison, you will be surrounded by so many other people. This might lead you to believe that you won’t ever be lonely.

But outside of the few friends you might manage to make in prison, it’s going to be a lonely experience. You’ll miss your family and friends at home.

You can call your family and friends every so often to check in with them. But there are no cellphones in prison as they’re against prison laws. So you won’t be able to just touch base with them whenever you want.

It’s Going to Be Boring

Maybe above all else, going to prison is going to be boring. You’re going to spend the majority of your time sitting and staring at the walls and wondering how you ended up in your current predicament.

Yes, you can read books, lift weights, and find other things to do to occupy your time. You might even be able to land a job after going to prison.

But for the most part, you’re going to be bored without a whole lot to do. It’ll make you wish that you hadn’t done whatever you did to end up in prison.

Going to Prison Isn’t Fun for Anyone

Going to prison isn’t always going to be as terrible as TV shows and movies make it out to be. But it’s also not going to be a walk in the park.

If you have to do it, you should put your head down and try to finish your sentence as quickly as you can. You should also vow never to return to jail once you’re able to get out.
